Under 14 National Title for Alec

Ormesby’s 13 year old Alec Ward won the English National Under 14 Table Tennis Championships that were played in Walsall over the weekend of 9/10 June 2012.

Alec, who was seeded 3^rd, produced some of his best table tennis to date to win an exciting final against the 2^nd seed,  Marcus Giles of Surrey.  Ward lost the first game at 11-5 and looked in some difficulty, but recovered well to win 2 tight games with the 2^nd at 11-8 and the 3^rd at 11-9.  Giles fought back strongly to level the match at 2-2 all  by winning the 4^th game 11-4, but Ward took command early in the decider and ran out a good winner with the final score at 11-5.

In the semi-final, Ward, who lives in Marton and attends Nunthorpe School, had another tough match against the dark horse of the competition, unseeded James Garrod of Yorkshire.  Garrod had performed well to oust the top seed Luke Savill of Kent by 3 games to 1.  In the semi-final, Garrod continued his good form, but lost to Ward in 4 close games.  The Ormesby boy won the first two at 12-10, 11-8 and lost the 3^rd at 11-8 and took the 4^th game at 11-9.

Ward’s most impressive win was the quarter final against the Dorset player,  Hugo Pang,  who had defeated Ward last month in the National Cadet Masters Competition. In this match, Ward was in command, winning in straight games 12-10, 11-5 and 11-8.

This is Ward’s first national title and should  put him in contention for England selection at cadet (under 15) level over the next 12 months.

The event which the Ormesby boy was most likely to score highly in  was the under 13 boys singles. However, his form in this competition was not as strong as the more senior under 14 event, and from the 2^nd seeded position was surprisingly beaten by  Robert Barker of Lancashire in the second round. This was a very tight affair in which the Lancashire player won by the narrowest of margins at 12-10 in the decider.

Karina Le Fevre top of the Grand Prix Under 21 womens standings after winning in Tipton

In the under 21 Women’s Singles top seed and Women’s Singles finalist Alice Loveridge was surprised in the group stage by Nat Slater. Nat reached the final after beating Yolanda King 3-0.

In the bottom half of the draw Alice had to face number two seed Karina Le Fevre. In another marathon battle between the pair it was Karina who came off better this time winning 3-2.

After seeing off the number one seed nothing was going to stop Karina celebrating her Grand Prix overall title by taking the weekends event as well. Karina raced to beat Nat 3-0 and take the first placed cheque.

Cleveland Closed 2012

Ormesby Karina Lefevre followed up her success in the Middlesbrough Championships two weeks ago by becoming the first female player to become the Cleveland County Table Tennis Open Singles Champion in the 35+ history of the County Association, when the County’s Closed Tournament was played at the Ormesby Club on Sunday. Lefevre, from the second seeded position, did well to beat Cleveland’s leading junior player, club mate, Paul Smith, by 3 games to 1 in the final.  Lefevre won the first 2 games, both at 11-8.  Smith recovered to win the third at 11-9, before Lefevre took the title at 11-5 in the 4^th game. Lefevre also did well to beat one of Britain’s top under-14 players, Alec Ward, by 3-1 in the quarter final and the English Juniors Master Girls Championship, Chloe Whyte, in three straight games. Smith, playing his first local tournament since returning to the sport, produced good form to beat ex-Middlesbrough Champion, Martin Rutter, in the quarter finals and then the top seed, the Durham and Cleveland County player, Darren McVitie, from Hartlepool by 3-1 in the semi-final. Whyte also played well to come through from the equal 5^th seeded position, to beat 3^rd seeded Hartlepool’s Durham County Star, Graeme Barella, by 11-8 in the 3^rd game.

Ormesby’s Alec Ward enjoyed a good tournament by winning both the cadet and the junior singles titles.  In the Juniors, Ward beat the 4^th seed, Sam Hitchen, 3-0 in the semi-final but then went on to win the final convincingly by beating Whyte by a very comfortable margin, 11-3, 11-6, 11-7 in the final.

As expected, Ward was dominant in the Cadet singles.  He beat Calum White in straight games in the semi-final and Aaron Uppal by the same score in the final.  Uppal did well to beat Josh Harland in a very tight semi-final.

The Restricted singles was won by Barella, who won a 3 way play-off against Martin Rutter and Lefevre to clinch the title.

The Handicap singles was won by David Ashwell who beat Northfields’ Billy Foster in a very tight final.  Ashwell gave Foster 2 start, but only clinched the decider at 21-20.  Nine year old James Dale from Ormesby did well to reach the semi-final of this event.

The Veterans singles was won by Hartlepool’s McVitie, beating Ormesby’s Ashwell 3 games to 1.

The Banded singles  was won by Calum White of Ormesby who beat Michael Ashwell and Nigel Savage in a 3 way play-off.

The Mini-Cadet singles winner was Northfield’s Holly Williams, who beat Robert Forrest and Cameron Elcoat to take the title.

Back to the Premier Division

Ormesby returned to the Premier Division of the British Table Tennis League on Sunday when the Teesside Club won the all-important play off competition, at the Club’s headquarters on Cargo Fleet Lane, Middlesbrough.

“The play offs are an “all play all” competition between the teams which were placed either first or second in  three first divisions,  with the prize for the top two being  promotion into the Premier Division.

Michael Marsden, Yongbo Zhang and Simon Noutch were the 3 key Ormesby players.  Marsden playing at No. 1 won 9 out of 10 sets.  Zhang at No. 3 was unbeaten and Noutch played his part, playing mainly at No. 4 and winning 9 of his 10 sets.

Ormesby started their fixtures on Saturday morning with a 6-2 victory over the South Yorkshire Team, Derwent, with Marsden, Zhang and Noutch all unbeaten.  Patrick Thomas was Ormesby’s 4^th player in this fixture and was beaten by Matthew Dodds and Mark Short.

Ormesby’s 2^nd fixture was the toughest and was against the team that was promoted with Ormesby – Kingfisher of Reading which resulted in a 4 all draw.  Zhang was the star of this match, winning both his sets in straight games.  Marsden lost to the Polish international player, Wiktor Dzwonkonwski at 11-7 in the decider, but was successful against Lloyd Gregory, winning in straight games.  Noutch was also beaten by Dzwonkonwski, but won his first match against Connor Edwards.  Karina Lefevre completed the Ormesby team, but lost her 2 sets in this match.

On Saturday evening, Ormesby competed against the BATTS Team from Essex and won by 6-2, with 2 wins each from Marsden, Zhang and Noutch.  Thomas lost both his games.

The match that clinched promotion for Ormesby was played on Sunday morning when the team beat the Halton Club of Merseyside by 7-1 win with two wins each from Marsden, Zhang and Noutch, whilst Thomas did well to beat Tomasz Rzeszotko.

Ormesby clinched the title with their final fixture win 8-0 against the bottom of the table team, York Gardens, from South London.  Zhang, Marsden and Noutch all won their two matches convincingly whilst Lefevre won her two at 11-9 in the deciding games.

These results put Ormesby’s lst team back into the Premier Division for next season.  The Club will have full participation in the British League for the new season starting in September with a total of 6 teams competing in the senior section, one in each division.  Ormesby is probably the only club in the country to have such wide participation.

Promotion for Ormesby 1

Ormesby seal promotion with comprehensive 7-1 victory

Ormesby clinched promotion to the British League Premier Division with their best display of the weekend on the second day of the British League Play-Offs in Middlesbrough. They beat Halton comprehensively 7-1 with Michael Marsden, Yongbo Zhang and Simon Noutch all staying undefeated. Patrick Thomas won once, recording a very good 11-8, 11-3, 11-9 victory over Tomasz Rzsezotko whilst Michael Moir was on target for Halton and he beat Patrick Thomas in five ends (11-13, 11-1, 11-5, 9-11, 11-5). After four rounds  of matches Yongbo Zhang is the only player to have won all of his games.

York Gardens excelled to hold Kingfisher to a draw. They came pretty close to taking both points. England no. 19 Junior Reece Placid turned on the style by winning both of his singles. He defeated Myles Collins 11-9, 11-8, 5-11, 11-8 and in his second singles encounter he produced some sparkling Table Tennis to take advantage of the huge Courts being used to defeat Wiktor Dzwonkowski 3-11, 11-7, 13-11, 14-12 – Wiktor’s first defeat of the weekend. The turning point was in the third end when Reece retrieved a 10-7 deficit to take the game. Wiktor didn’t give in without a fight but Reece held on to win an enthralling battle. Kingfisher were in trouble and it was a very relieved Myles Collins who held on to beat England no. 38 Junior Joseph Langham-Ferreira 14-12, 11-4, 9-11, 8-11, 11-8 to level the scores at 4-4.

Derwent moved on to six points by beating BATTS  5-3 and they will need to earn a draw against Kingfisher to seal the second place – assuming quite reasonably that Ormesby win their last match. Matt Dodds and Mark Short both picked up doubles for Derwent whilst Tony West picked up two good wins for the Essex Club. England no. 99 Tony West defeated Richard Smith (11-3, 11-9, 11-6) and Steve Horsfield (9-11, 11-6, 12-10, 11-4). Steve Horsfield had won his first singles by battling back from 2-0 down to beat England no. 59 Martin Kubrt 10-12, 9-11, 11-9, 11-5, 11-9.

Senior British League Play-Offs

After the first day of matches in the Premier Division Play-Offs at the Ormesby club, the Ormesby team led by Michael Marsden finished with 5 points and in top position closely followed by Halton and Derwent in joint second place with 4 points.

With another two matches to be played today, the Ormesby team cannot afford to take it easy as they endeavour to claim a place in the British Premier Division following their disapointment of being relegated last year.

Ormesby host Division One’s Play-offs for Premier Promotion

As winners of one of the 1^st Divisions, Ormesby are challenging for promotion back into the Premier Division of the British League when the club hosts the play off competition this weekend.

Ormesby will be playing against the winners and runners up of the other 1^st Divisions which are The Halton Club from Merseyside, Derwent from South Yorkshire, BATTS from Harlow in Essex, the York Gardens Club from Wandsworth in South London and the Kingfisher Club from Reading.

The Ormesby team will be led by the club’s number one player, Michael Marsden.  Included in the squad will be Welsh international Patrick Thomas, the Chinese player Yongbo Zhang who unbeaten throughout the whole of the season so far, Simon Noutch, Yorkshire County player and the new Middlesbrough Champion, Karina Le Fevre.

The strongest competition is likely to come from the Southern champions, BATTS of Harlow, whose team includes Sean Gibson, Martin Kubrt, Ryan Collins and veteran Jimmy Walsh.  Another strong challenger is the Halton Club whose team includes Tommy Rzeszotko, Richard Lightowler, Paul Hutchins and Michael Moir.  The team that Ormesby beat to win their division, Kingfisher, also have a strong team which includes the Welsh stars Dan O’Connell and Charlotte Carey.

Play starts at the Ormesby Club at 11.30 am on Saturday morning.  3 rounds of fixtures will take place on Saturday with the final 2 rounds being played from 10.00 am on Sunday morning.  Spectators are welcome.

Ormesby Hopes Elite Squad

Ormesby Table Tennis Club’s ‘Hopes Elite Squad’ began their new coaching sessions on 14 May with Alan Ransome and Steve Brunskill, two of Ormesby’s top coaches. The children have all progressed into the Elite squad after several weeks of training on the Hopes Level 2 program. Three sessions per week will now take place for the Elite squad with the Level 2 Program still continuing as before.

The ‘Hopes Elite Squad’ children can been seen in the picture with coaches Alan Ransome, Steve Brunskill and David Ashwell. David runs the ‘Hopes’ table tennis sessions in local Primary Schools and is always looking for more children to join the scheme which has proved to be extremely popular.

To help with the Elite Squad children’s progress, four more experienced young Ormesby players, Aaron Uppal, Michael Ashwell, Joshua Harland and Alec Ward have been invited to take part in the sessions as role models and to provide the new players with and example of how to practice.

Any young children aged up to 12 years of age can come to the Hopes Level 2 program that takes place on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 5.30pm to 6.30pm each week at the Ormesby club.

Elite Squad sessions are by invitation only.

Middlesbrough Championship Results 2012

Ormesby’s Karina Le Fevre won 3 titles in the Middlesbrough Table Tennis Championships, sponsored by Beaumont Insurance and Tees Sport, that took place on Sunday at the Ormesby Club.  She led the domination of female players in the tournament for the first time in its 75+ year history.

Karina won the Open Singles by beating Alex Garlick by 11-5 in the 5^th game in the hard fought final.  However Karina’s toughest test was in the semi final when she went 2 games to 0 down to her Ormesby team mate Chloe Whyte before fighting her way back to win by a narrow margin in the 5^th game.  Alex Garlick did very well to come from an unseeded position to reach the final by beating the second seed, Anthony Phoenix, 3-0 in the quarter final and former champion and 4^th seed, Martin Rutter, 3-1 in the semi.

Karina’s second title was the 1^st Division Singles where she beat Martin Rutter in the semi final and won a second very close contest with Chloe Whyte in the final, winning at 11-9 in the deciding game.  Chloe was unseeded in both events and defeated the 3^rd seed, Karen Shepherd, over 5 games in both.

Karina’s third title came in the Open Doubles where, partnered by Karen Shepherd, the Ormesby pair beat Martin Rutter and Anthony Phoenix at 11-8 in the decider in the final.

Sam Bell helps to promote the London School Games

Four Ormesby youngsters, Paul Smith, Alec Ward, Kayleigh Forster and Sam Bell have been selected to represent the England North East team in the Sainsbury’s 2012 School Games which takes place at the ExCel in London from 6 – 9 May.

For Sam Bell, playing in the disability events, the target is to win a hat-trick of gold medals. He was a champion in the disability singles when the UK School Games were played in Sunderland in 2010 and in Sheffield in 2011. The London competition provides him with the opportunity of a rare hat-trick. Bell also won two silver medals at the World School Championships in Italy last month.

For Paul Smith it is a return to competitive table tennis. He came very close to being selected for the England team for the European Youth Championships 12 months ago.

Alec Ward is playing in the School Games for the first time having shown tremendous improvement over the season and is currently ranked at No 2 in the English Under-13 list.

Kayleigh Forster is the only girl from Cleveland in the competition and gains her place after making significant progress over this year.

Kayleigh Forster and Alec Ward are also selected for the English Cadet (Under-15s) Masters Event which takes place in Slough later this month.

Junior Masters Title for Chloe

Ormesby’s Chloe Whyte produced her best ever performance to win the English Masters Junior Girls table tennis tournament in Burton at the weekend, and by doing so, went a long way to securing her place in the England team for the European Youth Championship in Austria in July.

Chloe represented England in the same Championships in Russia, last summer but following this received a serious setback when she sustained an arm injury at the time of the UK School Games which took place in Sheffield at the start of this season. This injury meant that Chloe missed a number of important events in the first half of the season, including having the opportunity to defend her English National Junior Girls title, win the Tees Active Stockton 4* Junior Tournament and play an important role for Ormesby in the Junior and Women’s British League. Since the New Year, Chloe’s injury has cleared up and her form has improved.

Going into this Masters tournament, regarded as the most difficult to win, Chloe was ranked at No. 6 in the English list, and therefore was 5^th seed in the competition.  The Ormesby girl went through the first day by winning all of her 7 sets and was equal top on the leader board on Saturday evening.  However, two matches against the leading players saw terrific finishes from Chloe as she beat  both the UK School Games Champion Yolande King of Sussex and Abbie Milwain of Derbyshire, the player who has presented problems for Chloe in the past.  Chloe won both of these matches by the narrowest of margins, at 12-10 in the deciding game, to gain the top position overnight.

On Sunday, Chloe opened with a win over the country’s best under-15 player, Tin-Tin Ho of Middlesex, who won the French Open Cadet Championship last week.  This was a victory by 3 games to 1.  Chloe then defeated Emily Bates of Lincolnshire, the player selected to represent England at the Senior European Championships earlier this season, also by 3-1.

Chloe’s only loss was to the current England No 1, Vicky Smith, from Devon as she was beaten 3 sets to 2.

The Masters Competition is a round robin event where all 14 entrants play each other. Vicky Smith lost three of her matches and this left Chloe at the top of the leader board to win the Championship, with Tin-Tin Ho in second place.

This is the second successive season an Ormesby player has won this prestigious title.  Twelve months ago, Karina Le Fevre won the Masters her last domestic Junior event before she graduated into the senior ranks.

Medals for Ormesby star Sam

Ormesby Table Tennis Club protégé Sam Bell was among the medals when he represented England in the ISF World Schools Championships, in Sardinia.

Sam’s first medal was for England in the disability team events, where he was partnered by Charles Sketchley of Burton.

The England team reached the final by beating Bulgaria and Italy, both 5 – 0, but lost narrowly to France to take the silver medal.

In the final, Sam won his first singles and the doubles with Sketchley and led 2 – 1 before France won the last two sets.

In the individual disability event, Sam won his qualification group before losing to top French player Lewis Dalby.

Dalby opened a two-game lead before Sam won the third game. In the fourth, Sam had the opportunity pf levelling the match, with a lead of 10 – 6 but the French player recovered well to win 13 – 11 and take the gold medal.

Sam has already gained honours in table tennis by being the UK school games champion on two occasions and will have the opportunity of making it a hat-trick when he plays in the London Games at the Excel Olympic venue at the beginning of next month.

National Junior League

Ormesby B, Mike Ashwell, Josh Harland and Callum McMahon finished in second place after the fourth and final round of National Junior League matches played at Ormesby TTC on Saturday 3 March 2012.

2012 English National Table Tennis Championships

Cleveland’s Paul Drinkhall produced what was probably his best display ever to win the final of the Men’s Singles in the English National Table Tennis Championships at Ponds Forge yesterday where he demolished the current England No 1 player Liam Pitchford from Derbyshire by 4 games to 1.

This is the 4^th time that Drinkhall has won the National Singles title.  However this time his approach was more determined and more focused than previous.  In the final against Pitchford the young Derbyshire player won the first game at 11-7 but from that point Drinkhall took command and reeled off the next 4 games at 11-4, 11-6, 11-3, 11-3 with a serious series of dynamic attacking strokes which left the young England starlet looking helpless.

To reach the final Drinkhall had some difficult matches.  His former doubles partner Darius Knight managed to level 2 all with Drinkhall in the semi final before the current English champion won the last 2 games at 11-7.  The quarter final was convincing as he beat the up and coming Northamptonshire player Chris Dorran by 4-0.  However in the second round Drinkhall recovered from 2-1 down to heat the Hampshire player David McBeath by 4-2.

This result provides a very encouraging boost for Drinkhall as he heads towards the World Team Championships in Dortmund later this month and the Olympic qualifiers in April.  It also coincides with a move from Italy to play for the German club Werder Bremen  to join Europe’s top league for next season.

The men’s doubles championship was won by another Cleveland player, Danny Reed, who partnered Knight to beat Drinkhall and Pitchford by 3 games to 1 in the final.  Reed also did well in the singles to reach the semi final, only to find Pitchford too strong, going down by 4 games to 0.

In the women’s events, Ormesby’s Karina Le Fevre and Northfield’s Jessica Dawson both reached the quarter finals with Le Fevre losing in straight games to the former English champion and top seed Joanna Parker of Surrey.  Dawson, who did well to beat the seeded Lincolnshire player Emily Bates in the last 16, was beaten 4-2 by Norfolk’s Lauren Spink.  Le Fevre reached the semi final of the women’s doubles, partnered by Derbyshire’s Emma Vickers before losing to the eventual winners, Joanna Parker and Kelly Sibley.

In the Under 21 women’s singles, Dawson reached the semi finals before losing to the top seed Hannah Hicks of Hampshire 3-0.

Grantham 4 star success for Alec Ward

12 year old Ormesby starlet Alec Ward confirmed his England No 1 Under 13 position at the first major Junior Table Tennis Championship of the new year, the Grantham 4 Star, when he won the Boys’ Singles and beat his 3 main rivals.

Alec, seeded No 1, defeated the 4th seed Luke Saville of Kent in the semi final, winning the match by 3 games to 2 after recovering from a 2-0 deficit. In the final Alec beat the No 2 seed and gained revenge for the Tees Active Stockton-on-Tees 4 Star Junior when he beat Tom Jarvis of Lincolnshire by 3 games to 2 to clinch the title.

In the Under 15 Cadet event Alec, seeded second, reached the final with a victory over the England No 3 Under 13 Hugo Pang of Dorset in the quarter finals and a second win against Saville, this time 3-0, in the semi final before losing to the top seed, Danny Lawrence of Kent, in the final.

In the Junior Girls’ Under 18 Singles Ormesby’s Chloe Whyte was making her come back to serious junior competition after a layoff due to an arm injury going back to the Summer. From the 4th seeded position Chloe reached the final with a narrow victory over Isobel Ashley of Derbyshire 11-6 in the decider before losing to Welsh international Angharad Phillips by 3-1 in the final. Phillips beat the top seed Tin Tin Ho of Middlesex 3-2 in the quarter final.

Chloe showed good form in the event which provides a positive outlook for the important events coming up over the next 2 months, including representing Ormesby in both the Women’s and Junior Girls’ British League Premier Divisions and the National Senior Championships in Sheffield at the beginning of March.

Former Middlesbrough Champion Martin Rutter won the Ormesby Club’s New Year Super 10 tournament on Bank Holiday Monday at the club’s centre on Cargo Fleet Lane.

In the final match Rutter won comfortably against the former English Junior Champion Chloe Whyte by 3 games to 0. Rutter also recorded good wuins over Alec Ward by 3-1 and Carl White by 3-0. Rutter’s only loss was in the first stage groups to Billy Forster by 3 games to 1.

Chloe Whyte finished second with only one loss – the final match against Rutter. Carl White did well to take third position with a 3-1 victory over Alec Ward who finished fourth. Kayleigh Forster was the winner of the second group, therefore finishing ninth with Brian Childs tenth.

Sam Bell had another win at the Merseyside Open Table Tennis Ranking Tournament on Sunday 11 December 2011 at Liverpool.

Sam who qualified in second place in his group went on to win the Standing 6 – 10 section.

Andrew Green, the youngest member of Malcolm Muldoon’s Ormesby Tennis Club Group, who also played at Liverpool, came home with two medals. Andrew’s first medal was won when he came runner up in the Novice Wheelchair 6 – 10 event.

Andrew then had the honour of being awarded the Male Competitor of the tournament and can be seen pictured with his medal.

After a series of impressive victories over the last month, Ormesby’s 12 year old Alec Ward has been catapulted to No 1 in the England Under 13 Boys’ table tennis ranking list.

In addition to be ranked No 1 in the Under 13 list, Alec has gone up from No 23 to No 4 in the Cadet (Under 15) list and from No 73 to No 16 in the Junior (Under 18) listing.

Alec’s best performance was in the National Junior Championships two weeks ago when he beat the England No 12 Under 18 Bradley Tuttle as well as defeating seeded Daniel McTiernan in the Under 15 event. Representing Cleveland in the County Championships Alec scored a victory over Tyrone Wells of Middlesex. In addition he won 3 titles – Junior, Cadet and Under 13 – in the Cramlington 2 Star Championships in Newcastle.

Alec, who lives in Marton and attends Nunthorpe School, has only been playing table tennis seriously at the Ormesby Club for just over 2 years which makes his elevation to No 1 in the Under 13 list all the more remarkable. Alec represents the Ormesby 5th team in the Men’s British League and the Ormesby A team in the Junior British League as well as playing for the Club in all 3 local leagues – Middlesbrough, Cleveland Premier and Cleveland Summer Leagues.

Upon receiving the news of his new ranking, Alec said “I am delighted but so far as my ambitions are concerned, it is only the start.”

Other Cleveland players in the England ranking list are shown as Paul Drinkhall who remains at No 2 in the Men’s list with Danny Reed keeping his place at No 4. Jessica Dawson has moved up to No 11 in the Senior list from No 13 and to No 3 in the Junior list from No 8 following her successes in winning both the Stockton 4 Star and the English National Championships.

Karina Le Fevre drops one place in the Women’s Senior list to No 7 while Chloe Whyte also drops one from No 11 to No 12. Both players have been restricted with arm injuries over the last 3 or 4 months which has had a major effect on their training and competition programme. Chloe also moves down one place from No 6 to No 7 in the Junior list having missed the British League, the Stockton 4 Star and the National Championships. Kayleigh Forster in the Cadet lists moves up from No 13 to No 9 whilst Billy Forster drops from No 10 to No 16. Sophie Barlow is at No 18 and Eleanor Davidson at No 25.

THE SEARCH FOR THE NEXT TABLE TENNIS SUPERSTARS IS ON!

The Ormesby Club has linked with the International Table Tennis Federation and Sport England to launch a talent search under the name ORMESBY “HOPES” to find the next Paul Drinkhall and Karina Lefevre from the Teesside area.

The Ormesby Table Tennis Club has been selected by the table tennis world governing body, the International Table Tennis Federation, as one of only 22 Training Centres from 16 countries across five continents for inclusion in the newly formed ITTF “Hot Spots” Training Centre network, and is the only club included from the United Kingdom. The program is designed to help talented youngsters age 12 and under to develop their table tennis skills so that they are included in their national teams and projected onto the world stage.

The Ormesby Club have taken the initiative, with support from Sport England, to launch a three tier Ormesby “Hopes” development project, starting with a series of 6 week introductory courses in up to 36 local primary schools. The youngsters from age 7 up, who participate in this program will be given the opportunity of joining the club and taking part in the club’s new “Hopes” squad, and those who show exceptional talent will be given the opportunity to progress into the “Hopes” Excellence group.

The program, which has just started this month, includes the following primary schools within the catchment area of Middlesbrough and Redcar & Cleveland in the North East of England: Bankfields Primary School in Eston, Corpus Christi R.C. Primary School just down the road from the Ormesby Club, Dormanstown Primary School in Redcar, Normanby Primary School and Saltburn Primary School. In addition there are six schools signed up for the first half of the new Spring term, plus another five schools so far for the following half terms. Opportunities are still open for schools to apply for sessions in the second half of the Spring and both Summer terms.

The second level at the Ormesby Club starts in the New Year and the Club will be recruiting young “Hopes” from the schools who have participated in the project so far and also from the wider public within the Club’s catchment area. Cleveland Schools South Under 16’s

A record number of 12 teams tooks part in the Under 16 age category of the Cleveland Schools (south) team tournament at Ormesby Table Tennis Club on Wednesday 9 November. Both the winners and runner up were from Redcar. With Redcar Community College finishing in first place and Rye Hills Community College second. Both teams have been given the opportunity to go through to the finals at Northfield School on Tuesday 15 November.

Nunthorpe School Under 16 girls also go through to the final at Northfield.

12 year old Alec Ward, the Ormesby table tennis starlet, achieved a remarkable treble at the Cramlington Junior 2 Star Championships in Newcastle on Sunday when he not only won his own age group event, the Under 13 Boys’ Singles, but also carried off the Cadet (Under 15) and Junior (Under 18) titles.

Alec, who plays for Ormesby in the Premier Division of the Junior British League and in the Men’s 5th team in the Senior British League, gave his best performance in the Junior event where he beat the holder and Northumberland No 1, Ryan Richardson. The final was described by the referee, Aubrey Drapkin, as the best he had seen for a long time.

Ward won the first game at 13-11 but the Northumberland giant, standing more than 6’6” tall, won the second comfortably at 11-7. Ward won another tight game in the third at 12-10 but lost a 5-1 lead in the fourth game for Richardson to win at 11-6. The decider in the David and Goliath affair was tight all the way to the wire with Ward losing two match points from 10- 8 up, then winning the title on his third match point at 12-10.

Alec beat another Northumberland County player, Ellis Cooper, in the semi final whilst Richardson beat Ward’s Ormesby British League team mate, Sam Hitchen, in straight games in his semi final.

Ward’s second title, the Cadet (Under 15) Boys’ Singles, saw him win a comfortable final against Ryan’s brother, Dean, in 3 straight games. The Under 13 final was an all Ormesby affair when Ward beat Josh Harland in straight games after Harland had defeated the second seed, Cameron Parker, in the semi final.

The Northfield Club from Stockton also had a successful visit to Cramlington, dominating most of the Girls’ events. Eleanor Davidson was the most successful player, winning both the Girls’ Junior Singles beating Eszter Soos of Sunderland in the final and the Cadet Singles, beating her club mate Katie Barlow 3-1 in the final.

The Under 13 Girls’ was won by Sophie Barlow who beat Devonne Alison to take the title. The same pair played out the Under 11 Girls’ final with Barlow winning again by 3 games to 1. Northfield took at further title in the Under 11 Boys’ Singles when Will Dobinson beat Charlie Anderson by 3 games to 1.

Veterans National League 2011/12

In the National Veterans’ League which was played at Blackpool November 5 & 6, the Ormesby Club, playing its first Veterans’ Team competition, won all 4 matches and head the division.

Ormesby beat Draycott & Long Eaton from Derby 4-2, Red Bats III from Nottingham by the same score, Graham Spicer II from London 6-0 and OLOP II of Reading by 5-1.

Steve Brunskill produced the best results with 6 wins from 6 matches whilst Carl White won 6 from 8, Michael Young 5 from 8 and Gary Whyman 2 out of 2.

Tees Active Stockton Junior 4* 2011

Ormesby’s Jessica Dawson played some of her best table tennis to win the Tees Active Stockton Junior 4 Star Open Championships at Thornaby Pavilion last weekend when she recorded wins over the England No 1, Emily Bates, and the leading Welsh girl, Angharad Phillips.

This result follows on some impressive form for Jessica so far this season when she won all ten of her sets for Ormesby in the Women’s British League in Bristol and, playing at No 1, 6 out of 10 in the Junior British League in Walsall.

Jessica’s win over Emily Bates was particularly impressive. Bates was a member of the England Women’s team which gained promotion to the Championship Division in the European Senior Championships in Poland recently and has shot up to No 3 in the England Women’s list. Jessica looked in command throughout the match, winning in straight games at 11-8, 11-8, 11-8. Against the Welsh player Phillips, Jessica had a harder fight. She lost the first game at 11-4 but recovered well to win the next three at 11-8, 11-7, 11-9.

Jessica came close to a second title in the Junior Girls’ Team event when Ormesby reached the final, only to lose to Bates’ team Grantham Tornadoes, by 3 sets to 1. Ormesby were weakened by the injury to Chloe Whyte which kept her out of the tournament and Whyte was replaced by Maria Tsaptsinos. In the final Dawson won her singles but Grantham picked up the other three sets.

Another good performance from a Cleveland perspective was the Ormesby Boys reaching the semi final of the Cadet (Under 15) Team event when they beat Ireland by 3-0 in the quarter final. Chris Wheeler and Billy Forster won singles whilst Wheeler and Alec Ward won the doubles. The Ormesby team was beaten in the semi final by the second seeds, Weald from Kent, whose team consisted of 2 of the leading England Cadets, Danny Lawrence and Jack Bennett. Ormesby’s only win was when Wheeler beat Bennett.

Wheeler also did well to win the Grade 1 Boys’ Singles by beating Sam Cowan of Middlesex. Wheeler trailed after losing the first two games at 12-10 and 11-5, only to recover to win the remaining three at 11-7, 11-8, 11-6.

Alec Ward came into his own in the Mini Cadet (Under 13) Boys’ Singles. Alec beat the 4th seed, Matthew Leete of Lincoln, 3-0 to reach the semi finals, only to be beaten by the current England No 1 and eventual winner, Tom Jarvis from Grantham, by 3 games to 1.

Another Ormesby player, Kayleigh Forster, excelled to reach the final of the Grade 1 Girls’ singles only to be beaten by Ireland’s Hannah Lynch-Dawson by 3-1.

Kayleigh, playing with Ella Patel for Ormesby in the Cadet Girls’ team event, did well to beat Ireland by 3-0 in the quarter final, only to lose narrowly to the London club Ellenborough by 3-2 in the semi.

The Boys’ Singles title was won by Daryl Gee of Hull who remarkably came from an unseeded position to take the title. In the final he beat one of last season’s England Cadets, the 2nd seed Jared Patel of Essex, by 3 games to 1. Gee beat the Scottish international Colin Dalgleish by 3 games to 2 in the semi final.

The prizes were presented by the Mayor of Stockton, Councillor Paul Baker.

Women’s British League 2011

With an outstanding performance from Jessica Dawson, the Ormesby Women’s team are in 2nd position in the Premier Division of the Women’s British League following the first round of matches played in Bristol last weekend.

At the conclusion of the first half Dawson leads the Premier Division averages with a maximum of 10 wins from 10 matches and these wins included victories over two players ranked above her in the England Junior list – Emily Bates who plays for the Thorntons team from Devon and Tin Tin Ho who plays for the current champions, Progress from London.

Ormesby opened their fixtures with two 6-0 victories against the Halton Club from Merseyside and Knighton Park from Leicester. The third match was against the current champions, DHS Greenhouse Progress from London with Progress winning 4-2. Egle Adomelyte who shares 100% averages with Dawson was the star player for Progress, winning both her sets whilst Tin Tin Ho won 1. Dawson won the 2 sets for Ormesby.

The fourth match was against the Devon club Thorntons where Dawson won 2 and Karen Shepherd won 1 of her sets. The final match was against the Poole Club from Dorset where Ormesby were winners by 5-1 with 2 each from Karina Le Fevre and Dawson and 1 from Shepherd.

In the averages Dawson was equal top with 10 out of 10 whilst Le Fevre, playing at No 1, won 6 from 10 and Karen Shepherd at No 2 also won 6 from 10.

Ormesby’s fourth player, Chloe Whyte, did not play due to an arm injury.

The second round of matches will be played in Doncaster in February.

British League 2011

In the Men’s British League played the previous week, the Ormesby 1st team are on track to regain their Premier Division status. They won all four of their opening matches at Harlow, beating Kingfisher of Reading 6-2, Fusion of Kent 7-1, Ashford of Middlesex 8-0 and BATTS of Essex 8-0.

Michael Marsden, Yang Zhang and Helshan Weerasinghe all finished with 100% records with 8 wins from 8 matches whilst Simon Noutch won 5 from 8.

In Division 1 North the Ormesby 2nd team were affected by Andy Wilson not having his personal player licence for the first day of play which meant that over the weekend Ormesby 2nd lost all four of their matches. In the averages from the games that counted Karina Le Fevre produced the best results with 3 wins from 4 matches whilst Steve Brunskill had 2 wins from 4 matches, Karen Shepherd 1 win from 2 matches, Andy Wilson 1 win from 4 matches and Paul Smith 1 win from 6 matches.

The Ormesby 3rd team in Division 2 North won 1 of their 4 matches against Drumchapel Glasgow 3rd team by 5-3. Shepherd produced the best results with 3 wins from 6 matches. Michael Young won 3 from 8, Martin Rutter 2 from 8, Anthony Phoenix 1 from 7 and Lefevre 0 from 2.

In the 3rd Division North Ormesby 4th team lost 3 of their matches and drew 1 against Redlands from Nottingham. 4 – 4 Aidan Ranftler produced the best performances for Ormesby with 3 from 6, Alex Garlick 2 from 4, Gary Whyman 2 from 6, Carl White and Adam Smith 1 from 8.

One of the best performances of the weekend came from the Ormesby 5th team, mainly juniors, who were playing in Division 5 at the Ormesby Club. They won 3 of their 4 matches, beating Pudsey 2nd 7-1, Blakeley’s Wigan 5-3 and Cliffdale Chandlers 8-0. Alec Ward was top of the performances winning 7 from 8, Dave Ashwell won 6 from 8, Ashley Scott 3 from 4, Sam Hitchen and Billy Forster 3 from 6.

Grantham 4 star success for Alec Ward

12 year old Ormesby starlet Alec Ward confirmed his England No 1 Under 13 position at the first major Junior Table Tennis Championship of the new year, the Grantham 4 Star, when he won the Boys’ Singles and beat his 3 main rivals.

Alec, seeded No 1, defeated the 4th seed Luke Saville of Kent in the semi final, winning the match by 3 games to 2 after recovering from a 2-0 deficit. In the final Alec beat the No 2 seed and gained revenge for the Tees Active Stockton-on-Tees 4 Star Junior when he beat Tom Jarvis of Lincolnshire by 3 games to 2 to clinch the title.

In the Under 15 Cadet event Alec, seeded second, reached the final with a victory over the England No 3 Under 13 Hugo Pang of Dorset in the quarter finals and a second win against Saville, this time 3-0, in the semi final before losing to the top seed, Danny Lawrence of Kent, in the final.

In the Junior Girls’ Under 18 Singles Ormesby’s Chloe Whyte was making her come back to serious junior competition after a layoff due to an arm injury going back to the Summer. From the 4th seeded position Chloe reached the final with a narrow victory over Isobel Ashley of Derbyshire 11-6 in the decider before losing to Welsh international Angharad Phillips by 3-1 in the final. Phillips beat the top seed Tin Tin Ho of Middlesex 3-2 in the quarter final.

Chloe showed good form in the event which provides a positive outlook for the important events coming up over the next 2 months, including representing Ormesby in both the Women’s and Junior Girls’ British League Premier Divisions and the National Senior Championships in Sheffield at the beginning of March.
